The Comprehensive Course Designed to Help Teachers Become Confident and Capable PE Specialists in the Primary Setting


Welcome to the Primary School Physical Education Specialism Course, the new, nationally recognised qualification from the association for Physical Education, designed to replace the former Level 5 qualification. This refreshed and enhanced content and approach will equip all delegates with the specialist knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver high-quality Physical Education lessons. This qualification will now be the minimum standard required to support in delivery of Physical Education. Accredited by the Leadership Skills Foundation (LSF), this course meets rigorous professional standards and reflects the latest developments in primary PE. Aligned with national priorities and curriculum expectations. This qualification will ensure that all delegates are able to provide every child in their setting, access to positive and meaningful PE experience, with the aim to inspire all pupils to seek healthy active lives.

Course Objectives: 

The Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism is a recognised qualification that aims to upskill delegates to be able to deliver high quality Physical Education lessons within a primary school.

On successful completion of this qualification, delegates will:

  • Be able to consistently deliver high quality Physical Education lessons
  • Be equipped to observe others and recognise strengths and areas of development
  • Competently apply assessment for learning strategies to ensure effective assessment of the whole child, informing next steps
  • Know how to ensure high quality and purposeful sequenced planning is in place

Course Cost and Duration:

The afPE Primary School Physical Education Specialism Course is delivered over six face-to-face training days, providing a comprehensive blend of theory and practical learning. These in-person sessions are spaced to allow for independent study and practical application between training days, enabling participants to embed their learning in real school contexts:

  • Course Duration: 6 days (face-to-face), typically delivered across one academic term or spread over two. These will be full days of training, typically lasting from 09:30am - 16:00pm.

  • Independent Work: Participants will complete structured tasks and reflective practice between sessions, contributing to final assessment requirements.

  • Cost: £1500 per participant

This format is designed to support busy school professionals while ensuring deep, sustained learning that leads to improved PE delivery in primary schools.
