Level 4 Qualification in Supporting Pupils’ Wellbeing Through Physical Education

We know that the wellbeing of children and young people is just as important as their physical health. Good emotional wellbeing enables children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and to grow into well-developed, healthy adults.

The Mental Health Foundation states that “going to a school that looks after the wellbeing of all its pupils” will help to keep children and young people mentally healthy. Research and trusted sources, such as the World Health Organisation, Public Health England and the Sport and Recreation Alliance, clearly articulate that emotional distress makes us more vulnerable to physical illness by affecting our immune system; additionally it is important to note that education and health are inseparable.

The Association for Physical Education (afPE) and the Leadership Skills Foundation (formerly Sports Leaders) strongly believe that those teaching physical education are key to supporting the emotional wellbeing of our pupils through the curriculum. Its importance is a high priority; therefore we have developed a qualification that will increase the knowledge and understanding of the workforce at such a critical time.

Now, more than ever, we must place physical education, sport and physical activity at the heart of school life to ensure that all children and young people have access to a high quality offer that supports their physical health and emotional wellbeing. This, in turn, will result in a positive impact on their social and cognitive development.

This online, accredited professional learning opportunity is not only timely, it will also support the profession to be a proactive part of the solution, which is to support all children and young people to achieve the best outcomes, in and beyond school.

What is the qualification & who is it aimed at?

The Level 4 Qualification in Supporting Pupils’ Wellbeing Through Physical Education is a nationally recognised qualification that enables delegates to become specialists in supporting the emotional and social wellbeing of pupils through physical education.

This qualification is open to both primary and secondary school teachers with QTS involved in the teaching of physical education.

The qualification has been designed to be delivered by either face-to-face study or blended learning, making use of virtual channels for knowledge acquisition supported by traditional assessment.

The qualification consists of the following 4 units and has a Total Qualification Time of 30 hours:

Delegate outcomes

By undertaking the qualification, delegates will be able to:

• Explain the importance of emotional and social wellbeing to pupils’ education and wider development
• Recognise current challenges to pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing
• Advocate the role of physical education in promoting pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing
• Plan, implement and evaluate physical education approaches that:
  o support pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing within their own practice
  o enable pupils to take care of their own emotional and social wellbeing
  o assist colleagues to support pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing in physical education
• Contribute to the promotion of pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing across the school

The specialist’s work will help pupils to develop positive emotional and social wellbeing by enabling them, in school and beyond, to:

• Connect to others and develop a sense of belonging
• Be active – physically and mentally
• Take notice of their environment and its impact on their emotions
• Keep learning and pursue their interests
• Give their time, energy, skills and positive attributes

The recommended cost (per delegate) to undertake the qualification is £350.

If you wish to deliver this qualification as a Professional Qualification Centre (PQC) you’ll need to undertake a virtual induction. This training will give new PQCs insight into the content, assessment and administration procedures of the Level 4 Qualification in Supporting Pupils’ Wellbeing Through Physical Education. The cost of the induction is £150.
