Early Years Motor Screening ProgrammeAcquiring Body Control - Block CBackwards Kneeling WalkBall control with the footBottom walkCrossing the midlineThis is a progression from Block B – children to kneel up and walk backwards on their knees, keeping their body upright and without wobbling from side to side.
Children to walk, kicking the ball around the hoop with control and coordination.
Children to sit on their bottoms and shuffle forwards. If they can, they could also turn around and return to their starting position.
children to touch opposite parts of the body, this helps connect one side of the brain with the other and teaches the brain to move limbs independently.
Full extensionJumping for distanceKneel up side to sideOverhead throwChildren to lie on their tummies and extend their arms and legs, making an arch position. If possible can they hold this for 5 -10 seconds..
Children to take off with an arm swing and land on two feet. They need to bend their knees and put their hands out in front of them in case they fall.
This is a progression from Block B, children this time to kneel with hips up and forward and this time rotate to the other side without wobbling.
Use a scarf to begin with, then progress to a squashy ball and finally a tennis ball. Children are learning to throw the object from next to their ear and extending their arm out straight. They need to throw with coordination and control, sending
the object in the correct direction.
Side to sideSkippingTuckChildren need to begin kneeling and then shift their hips over to one side of their body and then to the other. Try to keep their body at each side for 5 seconds.
Ensure children have a safe space where they can practice skipping in different directions.
Children need to pull up into a tuck position, but this time not using their hands to support them, these remain on the floor and head is also pulled up.
