Following The King’s acquiescence to the Prime Minister’s request to dissolve Parliament tomorrow, 30th May, in order that a campaign for a 4th July General Election may take place, please see below an update from the Association for Physical Education (afPE).
afPE’s POLICY REQUESTS • afPE is adamant that every child should receive weekly 2 hours of physical education and 2 hours of physical activity in school, as well as a chance of 2 hours of physical activity in the community. • To make our children healthier and fitter for life, we must also put physical development at the heart of early years education, and prioritise every child’s play with 60 minutes of physical activity daily. • afPE will be driving home these messages to politicians and press alike during the General Election campaign. • We can never take for granted the delivery of high quality PE to our deserving schoolchildren and students by our excellent workforce. • The lifelong benefits children gain from education in and through the physical domain must feature in and help drive every government’s education, health, social, and economic agenda.
CONTINUITY OF GOVERNMENT ADVICE
Parliament will dissolve on Thursday 30th May, and pursuant to that dissolution all ministerial work and decisions will be paused or restricted.
This will be compounded by the fact that the General Election falls just prior to the usual Summer Recess in both Houses of Parliament.
All UK Government officials have been advised against attending external visits, events, and meetings, but afPE will continue its usual endeavour to keep you as informed as possible.
afPE, the Department for Education, and the Youth Sport Trust had intended to hold a webinar to update colleagues on recent amendments to the conditions of the Physical Education & Sport Premium.
Please monitor the news section on the afPE website for further information.
