Derby City SSP – Champions in PE and School Sport
11 December 2015
In September 2014 Derby City School Sport Partnership was one of the first organisations in the country to deliver two new national qualifications designed to give school staff the knowledge, confidence and skills to deliver PE and School Sport. Delegates were invited to a graduation event (pictured left) at Derby County Football Club which included a pitch side photograph and certificate presentation, followed by watching Derby County play Cardiff City (Derby County won 2-0!). Jo Wilkinson, Business Manager, Derby City School Sport Partnership said: “We are pleased that many have been able to attend the match today to graduate and be awarded with their new certificate. It is great to hear how much teachers and teaching assistants have gained from completing the qualifications and we look forward to continuing to support them with their professional learning. We are proud of their achievements and would like to congratulate them all on their hard work.” In addition to training school staff, 12 Coaches at Derby County Community Trust were amongst the first in the country to complete the Level 3 qualification. By working in partnership they are able to advocate best practice through upskilling teachers, with coaches playing a role to support teachers in the delivery of PE and School Sport which enhances opportunities for children. Sue Wilkinson, Strategic Lead, afPE said: “afPE is delighted that a valued business associate, Derby County Community Trust, has worked with their coaches to ensure that they have a workforce that is appropriately qualified to support schools. The coaches have successfully completed their level 3 1st4sport and afPE qualification‘Supporting the Delivery of PE and School Sport’. It is important that teachers and coaches have access to high quality professional learning to support their different roles in PE and school sport. Many congratulations in achieving your QCF accredited qualification.” Derby City School Sport Partnership is hosted and employed by Derby County Community Trust and they work collectively to maximise the positive impact that high quality PE, School Sport and Physical Activity can have on young people. It is a unique arrangement for a School Sport Partnership to be hosted by a professional sports club and the partnership is thriving. The strength of this model has gained recognition at a national level recently when Derby County Community Partnership won the Johnstone’s Paint ‘Community Club of the Year’ at the Football League Awards 2015, with Derby City SSP as the flagship programme. In addition, Derby City SSP were awarded the Level 5/6 Outstanding Professional Learning Centre 2015 by the Association for Physical Education and Sports Leaders UK.
