afPE Heart of England Region – Professional Learning Day
17 February 2016
The afPE Heart of England Region is staging a professional learning day on Tuesday 24th May from 8.30am – 3.30pm at Saltwells Education Development Centre in Dudley. Title: ‘Moving ME Forward – re-energising assessment in Physical Education’ Morning Session: ‘Promoting Learning and Teaching through Climate, Clarity and Consequences’ During this session Jane Howard, Learning and Teaching advisor will explore: 1. The climate for learning - How pupils learn from their mistakes. How teachers can shape the learning environment. How the language we use shows the values we hold
- How developing a Growth Mindset can positively influence learning (the work of Carol Dweck will be discussed)
- How teachers can support pupils to learn from what they do and to give them the skills, understanding and confidence to be independent
- References will be made to Personal Development Health and Welfare section in the latest Ofsted handbook
2. Clarity for learning - Are we as teachers clear about the learning and the outcomes?
- Are we confident in our professional judgement?
- Have we planned clear sequences of learning?
- Do learning objectives and success criteria reflect the pupil’s needs?
- In response… do pupils know what the success criteria looks like?
- Is it explicit? Is it shared? Have they contributed to it? Do the questions we ask help children to make connections which support progress?
3. Consequences of the learning opportunities - Asking ourselves the ‘so what’ question. As a result of the lesson how has the level of pupil’s knowledge, skills and understanding changed? Written or verbal feedback is only effective if either the teacher or the pupils changes their approach to the learning as a result of the interaction.
- As the teacher – what do I need to change to make it even more successful?
- Pupils reflecting – how well am I doing? What do I need to do differently? What do I need to do next? What are my next steps?
Following Jane’s session delegates will have the opportunity to look more closely at how the areas of ‘Climate’, ‘Clarity’ and ‘Consequences’ can be applied to learning within PE. During the afternoon: Delegates will be able to consider and discuss how current practitioners are approaching assessment for learning in PE, and gather and share ideas to help them with their own practice. The day will conclude: With an update on national PE issues from Sue Wilkinson, Strategic Lead for afPE. This will equip delegates with the information needed to ensure that PE continues to ‘Move Forward’ in their schools and organisations. Cost: £95.00 (afPE members); £105 (non afPE members) Register to attend: To register please completed and return a registration form and email it to Jayne Piller at JP1310@live.co.uk Following the Professional Learning Day: afPE Heart of England Regional Meeting May 24th 2016 4.00-7.30pm at Saltwells Education Development Centre Following the professional learning day, afPE Heart of England will be holding its regional meeting.
