What is PIE?

Teachers, coaches and volunteers have a responsibility to protect students from harm. There are only three ways to make activity situations safe. Adults teaching physical education, sport and physical activity will provide safe sessions where they think about what can be anticipated in the activity and organise to PREVENT incidents arising. This can be reinforced by INFORMING students about the hazards and risks that may be present in the activity, helping them recognise what might cause harm. EDUCATING students about being safe enables them to learn about what is safe and what is unsafe.

Together, preventing, informing and educating about safety provides a simple structure, and easily remembered acronym – PIE, for all to enjoy physical education, sport and physical activity safely.

The new poster shows commonly used examples to help explain how adults organise to PREVENT harm, INFORM about hazards and EDUCATE students about what safety involves. Teachers, coaches and volunteers can easily bring to mind many more such strategies that they use in everyday teaching and coaching which fit into these three headings.

Safe practice and safety awareness can readily be enhanced where adults structure their planning and teaching around these three factors. PIE – what an easy way to think about safety.
