afPE staged its 10 Year Celebration Event at London City Hall on Tuesday, 19th April. As part of the event a number of awards were presented, these were as follows: Awards for Contributions to Securing One Association Three awards were presented in recognition of the hard work and dedication that Jo Harris, Alan Lindsay and Steve Kibble (pictured bottom right) displayed in securing a single subject association for physical education. Lifetime Achievement Awards Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honour it recognises outstanding achievement over the course of the winners careers, and rewards someone whose contribution over many years is truly exceptional. - Tony Byrne (pictured bottom left)
Tony is CEO of Sports Coach UK and the Managing Director of Coachwise. The British Association of Advisers and Lecturers in Physical Education (Baalpe) had an excellent relationship with Tony. His leadership and vision resulted in Coachwise taking over the publication Safe Practice in PE and School Sport which meant the millennium edition sold over 20,000 copies. This was testament to his commitment to ensure that the publication was used by all schools across the UK. For over 25 years Tony has worked with baalpe and latterly afPE to ensure every edition, in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and latterly 2016 has been produced to a high standard. Coachwise through 1st4sport have worked closely with afPE to design and accredit two critical vocational awards that have been instrumental in shaping the profession. Tony’s commitment to ensure that Coaches supporting PE received a vocational award has meant over 5000 coaches have now gone through the award. He supported the development of an Early years level 3 physical development and truly deserves this award. - Peter Whitlam (pictured top right)
Peter has shown rather than just taught us all — more so than the average person — he practices what he preaches. His knowledge and intellect always makes him the smartest person in the room, but he never flaunts it. He has authored seven editions of the definitive guide, Safe Practice in Physical Education and Sport which is used by teachers in schools, Governors, local authorities, advisers, Ofsted teams and ultimately the legal profession if and when cases have been bought to court. The resource is unique and an updated edition is produced every four years. The resource comprises advice and guidance evidenced by Case Law to prevent, inform and educate those working with children and young people. This is supported by simple though effective professional learning opportunities to ensure the PE and Sport sector are kept updated. Free newsletters and articles are regularly published and for 15 years Peter has been on call to the sector whenever there has been an enquiry regarding health and safety. As a result of his work, knowledge and time invested it has ensured that all young people across the home countries have experienced PE and Sport at an appropriate challenge and therefore acceptable risk. It is no coincidence that accidents in schools and clubs have been kept to a minimum. Teachers, coaches and other professionals involved in PE and Sport use the document as a basis for risk assessment and planning. The professional support and learning that Peter has designed and provided has ensured clear, simple messages which give teachers and others confidence in their ability to teach safely. It cannot be stressed enough how valued and respected Peter’s work is across the education sector. The Department for Education has previously invested in the resource through Martin Elliot in the health and safety team and the 2008 Edition had a forward written by Lord Adonis, Parliamentary under Secretary for schools. When the DfE health and safety team ceased, colleagues at the department continued to ask for advice. This can be evidenced by the then Secretary of State, Michael Gove who wrote a letter advising Peter Robinson, father of Ben Robinson, to seek support from the Association for Physical Education. afPE Quality Mark for Physical Education & Sport Awards Five awards were presented to schools who are the first to successfully re-apply for the afPE Quality Mark. - Lyng Hall School, Coventry (Quality Mark)
