afPE Launches New Concussion Awareness Course

Context:
Someone falls in the playground and feels dizzy; a pupil hits their head on the edge of the swimming pool and complains of feeling sick; a rugby player mistimes a tackle and takes a severe blow to the head causing him to lose consciousness momentarily. Would you know what to do?

This workshop will establish that concussion incidents can occur anywhere in a school at any time. Particular focus will be given to physical education and school sport situations. Guidance will be provided on what to look for, how to deal with such situations and what school procedures on dealing with concussion should contain. afPE and published national guidance will be provided.

Intended Outcomes:
By the end of the course delegates should:

  • Have increased a basic knowledge, or confirmed a sound knowledge, of concussion recognition and recovery principles
  • Feel more confident about assessing and responding to possible concussion situations
  • Have a greater awareness of sources of advice relating to concussion
  • Some understanding of the extent to which school documentation should address the treatment of concussion and what additions need to be made to existing policies and procedures
  • Have the materials to develop policy and procedures for the recognition and recovery from concussion
  • Have sufficient information to take a lead in providing whole school professional learning about concussion
  • Have given some thought to strategies to prevent concussion incidents
