afPE, the Football Association (FA) and the Rugby Football League (RFL) are delighted to announce a partnership incorporating the pilot delivery of First Aid courses for PE and school staff in England and Wales.

The FA and more recently the RFL have successfully delivered Emergency First Aid (EFA-3hrs) and Basic First Aid for Sport (BFAS-6hrs) for over 20 years. EFA is part of the coaching licence arrangement for all community coaches. BFAS is required by allocated pitch-side First Aid staff at community clubs, full time professional Academy staff and Coach Educators.

Ad hoc courses have been successfully delivered in schools recently and have significantly added value to the safeguarding and welfare protocols required by the education sector.

The BFAS course is being offered to schools in England and Wales as part of the pilot process where we will collate extensive feedback from the hosting establishment(s) in making the award robust and fit for purpose.

Four courses are planned for:

1. England (North, Midlands and South)
2. Wales

BFAS is regarded as an equivalent of the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) awards that have been historically offered to schools by various providers. The BFAS has significant focus on physical activity, concussion management in the education sector, medical emergency action planning as well as more traditional First Aid training elements.

Expressions of interest are requested to host a course for school staff to be held by mutual consent over the last 2 weeks of the Summer term. It’s suggested that 12 staff attend the course from various departments within the school. Dispensation has been granted to allow for a significant discount to the hosting school of £30 per person. Staff attending will be issued with a BFAS award (upon successful completion) that is valid for 3 years. The course will be delivered by 2 senior medical tutors from the FA and RFL.

If your school would wish to host one of the 4 courses planned, please contact Andrew Lindley: andrew.lindley@thefa.com
