Modern lifestyles ‘stripping physical activity’ from our kids

23/11/16 British children are among the least active in the world, an international study has warned. Less than a fifth of adolescents get the recommended daily amount of exercise, prompting experts to warn that modern lifestyles were “stripping physical activity” out of young people’s lives. The fitness of English children has deteriorated in the past two years while those in Scotland are among the least healthy in the world, according to the research. The study compared 38 countries around the globe and gave them grades based on indicators including children’s participation in organised sport, sedentary behaviour and active transportation. Scotland was one of only two nations handed the worst overall rating, F – meaning the country was deemed to be “failing” for more than 80% of children. England and Wales each received grade D-, with 20-39% of children getting a healthy amount of physical activity. The rankings were compiled by a worldwide alliance of health experts and presented to the the International Congress on Physical Activity and Public Health in Bangkok on Wednesday.
