The Association recently advertised the role of Health & Safety Officer following the sad and untimely passing of Angela James. We received a number of outstanding applications, and as a result of the interviews that have taken place, we are pleased to announce the appointment of the following colleagues:

  • Steve Caldecott (Health & Safety Officer)
  • Jan Hickman (Assistant Health & Safety Officer)
  • Nicky Scott (Assistant Health & Safety Officer)

One of the many benefits of afPE membership is access to advice and guidance in relation to Health & Safety and Safeguarding. The creation of this new team will enable afPE to increase its high quality support for members and the wider profession. If you would like to discuss booking a professional learning course on Safe Practice, please email cpd@afpe.org.uk or call 01905 855 584.

Sue Wilkinson MBE, afPE’s CEO said:

“afPE has an excellent reputation for the provision of all aspects of Heath and Safety in PE, school sport and physical activity. As part of afPE’s growth and commitment to excellence in provision I am delighted to confirm that afPE has expanded its health and safety team to include a Health and Safety Officer and two Assistant Health and Safety Officers. We are extremely fortunate to have such a wealth of expertise and knowledge within our membership. I know that the team will continue to excel in the services offered to members and the wider PE, SS & PA sector. afPE believes that every child and young person should be taught safely and taught safety as a basic entitlement.”

Mike Crichton, afPE’s Chair said:

“Every four years, afPE produces the highly acclaimed and very important Safe Practice in Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity book. For many years this publication has been the most sought after resource in supporting educational establishments, Local Authorities and the wider PE and sport sector in minimising risk and offering extensive guidance in ensuring PE, sport & physical activity is delivered safely, securely and efficiently. With many years of experience, a background of high quality safe practice guidance and support (backed up with case study law), afPE is proud to be the sector leader and as part of the Association’s expansion is creating a new approach to researching and developing this highly important area of work. As Chair of afPE, I am delighted to announce this expansion and look forward to future developments in ensuring safe practice remains a key priority and supports the sector with rigour and in depth knowledge.”

Steve Caldecott, afPE Health & Safety Officer said:

“I am very grateful to afPE for being offered a role with the health and safety team. This is an exciting opportunity because, if we help those who work with young people to act safely and with confidence, it will contribute to increasing participation in high quality physical education, sport and physical activity.”

Jan Hickman, afPE Assistant Health & Safety Officer said:

“I am thrilled to be part of the new afPE Health and Safety Team and look forward to representing the profession in this important area.”
