09/12/22 afPE is growing its staff team to enable the association to deliver its new strategic plan which involves a commitment to support a highly skilled workforce and to ensure that physical education is a transformational experience for all children and young people. We are seeking expressions of interest for the post of Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO). The reason for this is that this is an unusual role and afPE is open to negotiation and discussion regarding the post and future recruitment. afPE is a subject association comprising of individual and organisational members committed to ensuring the quality of physical education, school sport and physical activity is of the highest standard in all educational establishments. - SALARY: Competitive
- HOURS: 37 hours per week
- REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer
- LOCATION: Negotiable with visits to the office required
Main Purpose The Deputy Chief Executive role will work primarily with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Board of Trustees and staff to deliver the business strategy. The DCEO will be accountable for the operational delivery of aspects comprising of: - Deputising for the CEO where appropriate
- Representation and delivery at key PE conferences and events
- Attending strategic stakeholder meetings
- Over-seeing specific projects
- Line management of staff related to the role
We are looking for a natural leader who will reflect the association’s values, mission and vision and in conjunction with the CEO ensure the ongoing sustainability, growth and success of the charity. Key Tasks Strategy, Planning and Control - To develop the association’s strategic business plan in conjunction with the CEO and the senior staff, reflecting the organisation’s values, mission and vision, considering external factors affecting the work of the sector.
- To ensure that all accountable services are methodically planned, delivered and reviewed, working internally and externally to strategically respond to changing need.
- To lead on the delivery of good quality support services consistent with the model of multi-disciplinary working and professional partnerships as reflected within wider organisational strategies.
- To ensure that the organisation remains competitive in the marketplace through:
-
- effective benchmarking arrangements
- ongoing cost benefit analysis of services being delivered
- having an understanding of the funding available to individuals
- To ensure that the needs, wellbeing and safeguarding of users of the organisation’s services are at the core of the way the organisation delivers its services.
- To develop a culture of continuous improvement throughout all aspects of the association’s work.
Financial Management - In conjunction with the CEO and Finance Manager, to be accountable for the development of the overall annual budget for the organisation and to ensure that the Head of Operations and agreed budget holders are clear on their responsibilities for delivering their agreed budgets.
- To report into the Board of Trustees on operational budget performance.
- To work in conjunction with the CEO in relation to the risk management of the organisation and to ensure that the risk management strategy and the risk register agreed is in place, reviewed and implemented.
Robust Governance - To work with the CEO in developing effective working relationships with the Board of Trustees and to ensure that systems, processes and structures are in place and are reviewed to enable the Board to fulfil their statutory and governance obligations.
- With the CEO to ensure that the organisation fulfils its legal, statutory and regulatory requirements and operates within approved frameworks, requirements and guidelines.
Leadership - To support the CEO in taking responsibility for the effective delivery of all functions within the strategic and accountability frameworks established by the Board of Trustees.
- To be able to lead on key issues within the subject to support the workforce.
- To support the CEO in their overall accountability for the delivery of good quality services and their associated standards from a legislative.
- To support the CEO and the Health & Safety Team to ensure safe and effective practice and compliance for the subject
- Promote the organisation to ensure a positive external image and highly motivated workforce, representing the organisation to the media where appropriate.
General - To have the required experience and skill set to deputise for the Chief Executive Officer in their absence.
- Ensure that all responsibilities are undertaken in an effective and appropriate manner, which meet the requirements of and in accordance with the organisation’s Code of Conduct for Employees.
- Participate in regular supervisions and performance appraisal with the Chief Executive Officer.
- Ensure that all organisational Policies and Procedures are always adhered to.
- Undertake appropriate role as and when required in respect of any disciplinary or grievance matters and ensure full and consistent implementation of those procedures across all accountable services.
- Work in accordance with the organisations culture, values, aims and objectives.
- Act as a positive ambassador for the organisation at all times.
- Undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required from time to time.
