The Association for Physical Education has developed a film, aimed at the Primary sector, that advocates and evidences the contribution Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) make to whole school improvement.

This resource will support you to advocate and persuade those colleagues who are currently unconvinced about the difference Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity make to the lives of young people.

The film is available for purchase in two formats:

  • Digital Download (£2.99 including VAT)
  • Hardcopy CD-ROM (£5.99 including VAT and P&P)

afPE members can access the resource free of charge by accessing the members’ area of the website.

Before using the film it is important that you familiarise yourself with its content and then you can select the appropriate excerpts that support you when advocating the need to ensure high quality Physical Education is at the heart of school life. School Sport and Physical Activity emanate from high quality Physical Education and become embedded in the ethos of the school.

The film demonstrates:

  • The clear vision that the Head Teacher has for the roles of PESSPA
  • The role of the Subject Leader which includes developing other staff
  • The role of the classroom teacher in making other subjects active
  • The role of coaches in working alongside the teaching staff
  • Parents attitudes to PESSPA and why they hold the school in high regard
  • The importance of PESSPA from the Chair of Governors
  • How PESSPA can impact on pupils – see the three case studies which include a pupil who had behavioural issues, a pupil who had always been inactive and a pupil who had confidence issues. All three clearly articulate the difference that PESSPA have made to their lives
  • The role of the Sports Leaders and the Pupil Sports Council
  • Most of the wider skills that are identified on the afPE Outcomes Poster
  • Also the attributes of well-balanced children identified in the Head/Hands/Heart Poster
  • The effective use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium Funding in meeting the 5 Key Indicators;
  1.  Engagement of all pupils in regular Physical Activity
  2.  The profile of PE and Sport in the school
  3.  Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of staff
  4.  Broad range of sports and activities
  5.  Increased participation in competitive sport

N.B. It is important to note that none of the people, including pupils, in this film were coached or their views edited. They were confident enough to invite us into the school to see exactly how they all valued PESSPA. It was a privilege to experience such commitment to ensuring that all pupils can achieve their maximum potential and the contribution PESSPA make.

The following afPE posters/publications are included within this resource:

  • Outcomes Poster
  • Head/Hands/Heart Poster
  • Definitions of PESSPA Poster
  • Governors Update
  • Importance of PE Poster
  • Importance of Being Active Leaflet for Parents/Carers
