The UK’s drowning prevention charity – The Royal Life Saving Society UK is urging teachers to support its national campaign, and ensure their pupils know how to stay safe and have fun near the water.

Latest statistics indicate that 56 children of primary school age drowned in the UK over the last five years, and 98 pupils of secondary school age.

Drowning Prevention Week, run by RLSS UK, aims to cut down the number of drowning tragedies and near misses that happen in the UK and Ireland every year by encouraging schools, leisure centres and communities to promote water safety advice.

As part of the campaign, this year supported by the Department for Education as well as the RNLI and Swim England, a host of free and interactive resources have been produced that can be used in schools and youth groups.

Resources, including outdoor activities and swimming lesson plans, can be downloaded by registering your interest in the campaign at www.rlss.org.uk/dpw.
