Pupil and teacher ‘well-being’ to feature prominently on the agenda of the Schools & Academies Show
07 October 2019
07/10/19 The Children Society has recently released The Good Childhood Report, its annual research on the state of children’s well-being in the United Kingdom. This year’s results show a worrying decrease in children that may describe themselves as happy with their lives. 250,000 children, between the age of 10 and 15, are less happy with their appearance and their friendships. Financial strain or poverty can also affect their overall well-being. Potential causes have been identified and they include display of toxic masculinity and unrealistic appearance standards, bullying, excessive use of social media and loneliness. In recent years there has been an increasing awareness on the importance of well-being and the role that education has in it. Experiences in school shape children’s conscience and empowers them to become critical thinkers and well-rounded citizens. The Schools and Academies Show has recognised well-being as a priority for both learners and teachers and has reflected this into the wider agenda of the show. In addition, for the first time at the show in Birmingham, visitors will be able to attend the Well-being Demo Area, a space dedicated to mental health, achievement and happiness precisely for pupils and school’s staff. It will host a range of demonstrations and mini presentations, providing insights to visitors on inclusion and diversity, yoga and fitness, while also teaching tips and techniques that they can bring back to their school and apply in their daily life. Across the two days, sessions will take place in a more informal environment, engaging the audience in conversations and exchange of views. Among the organisations that have confirmed their participation, the audience will find Stonewall, the leading LGBTIQ+ charity in the United Kingdom, Soil Association, Teen Yoga Foundation, Hey Girls and Escape Training. Join us at the leading education event, at the NEC in Birmingham on 13th – 14th November 2019. N.B. Sue Wilkinson MBE will be delivering a keynote speech during the School Improvement Summit (1.50pm on 13th November 2019). The title is: ‘Improving Student Well-being through PE, Sport and Physical Activity’. The Association will also have a presence within the dedicated ‘PE, Sports & Healthy Pupils Zone’.
