Free afPE Webinars: Health-Based Physical Education
05 May 2020
05/05/20 To continue to support our members and the sector during these unprecedented times, the Association for Physical Education is hosting a number of free webinars over the coming weeks. The sixth and seventh free webinars in the series focus on Health-Based Physical Education – a framework for promoting active lifestyles in children and young people. Health-Based Physical Education, a new and evidence-informed pedagogical model, places ‘valuing a physically active life’ as its central theme, with the goals of supporting young people to be habitual, motivated, informed and critical movers. The model reconceptualises what health-related learning and teaching might look like in terms of promoting active lifestyles. In the following two webinars, Health-Based Physical Education will be proposed as one framework which can support physical educators to effectively promote young people’s physical activity behaviours. During the webinars, the pedagogical model will be explored from both a theoretical and a practical perspective, drawing on published research and empirical data from the first school-based programmes to implement this unique framework.
Webinar 6 Title: Introducing a new pedagogical model for Health-Based Physical Education Summary: This webinar presents a rationale for new ‘PE-for-health’ (Armour & Harris, 2013) pedagogies, based on evidence related to contemporary physical (in)activity levels, our understanding of dominant approaches to teaching health-related learning in PE and the growing use of pedagogical models in the subject. Specifically, the session will present and justify the framework for Health-Based Physical Education, including the model’s major theme and goals, the critical features for teaching and learning, as well as the underlying theories and evidence used to understand physical activity motives and behaviours in children and young people. Time & Date: 11am on 11th May 2020. Duration: 45 minutes. Delivered By: by Dr Paul Sammon & Dr Mark Bowler from the University of Bedfordshire. To register to attend this FREE webinar click HERE.
Webinar 7 Title: Health-Based Physical Education in Practice Summary: This webinar will provide a range of practical examples to illustrate how the Health-Based Physical Education (HBPE) model can be effectively applied in physical education to help promote positive physical activity behaviour in children and young people. Specifically, we will consider some key questions in relation to the model’s learning and teaching features, such as how to create an inclusive learning environment, how to support students to achieve the HBPE learning goals and how to assess learning holistically across multiple domains. Time & Date: 11am on 18th May 2020. Duration: 45 minutes. Delivered By: by Dr Paul Sammon & Dr Mark Bowler from the University of Bedfordshire To register to attend this FREE webinar click HERE.
