Listening to our members and the wider workforce, some schools, post the Covid lockdowns, are struggling to utilise their Primary PE and sport premium underspends. In addition, for a number of reasons, schools are finding it difficult to meet their swimming commitments and targets. Therefore, as a collaborative project, the Association for Physical Education, Youth Sport Trust and Active Partnerships have created a free resource as part of our Primary PE and sport premium commitment. This will support the workforce and encourage schools to spend some of their funding on improving swimming attainment, through additional interventions.

Sue Wilkinson MBE, afPE CEO said:

Swimming is an essential lifesaving skill and sadly significant numbers of children are leaving primary school unable to swim or to be safe in water. Obviously the past two years have presented a real challenge and we are pleased to provide this very helpful resource which leads you through a process whereby you can use Primary PE and sport premium funding to provide additional or top-up swimming.

Kate Thornton-Bousfield, YST Head of PE and Achievement said:

We are delighted to have collaborated on this supporting document to help teachers and the school workforce consider the use of the Primary PE and sport premium funding in helping all children achieve swimming expectations. Swimming is such an important life skill and must not be overlooked. The pandemic has impacted many children in accessing swimming pools and transferring their skills to the water, even after curriculum swimming has been delivered many children have not met expectations. Hopefully, this document will challenge schools and teachers to think creatively about their swimming provision.
