Join us on Tuesday 12th December 2023, at the Hilton Metropole at Birmingham NEC for a day of transformative professional development for everyone working within the PESSPA sector.

The day will feature a range of inspirational and insightful keynotes, accompanied by a large choice of workshops (including practicals), and the opportunity to spend time to network with likeminded ‘PEople’!

In response to various policy announcements, the Ofsted Subject Report, and the Physical Literacy Consensus Statement, afPE believes colleagues should have the opportunity to come together to address how we achieve the best outcomes for children and young people.

Continuing on from the Taskforce recommendations, afPE will share how we can support the reframing of transformative PE. Kim Leadbeater MP will share her vision for a healthy Britain, and Hanna Miller HMI will close the conference by focusing on effective practice.

We are delighted to announce Enrich Education as the headline sponsor,  valuing outdoor activities within and beyond the PE curriculum.

The event is supported by the Leadership Skills Foundation and Howdens.

We shall be showcasing a large range of exhibitors who will be there to provide you with the latest products and services that will help positively impact your PESSPA offer.

Please join us for a day of addressing the workforce priorities.

Our Workshops:

Please see below our wonderful range of workshops to explore. You will be able to book your selection of workshops during the booking process.

Workshop Session 1

During this workshop, Enrich Education will provide practical examples of how schools can deliver effective outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) as a part of their PE curriculum. Ofsted’s recent report on PE – “Levelling the playing field: the physical education subject report” found that "outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) are either not taught effectively or not taught at all.” They also found that “staff lacked competence and confidence” to teach this part of the PE curriculum.

We will provide examples and resources that will help with improving this area of PE in your school and explore ways in which you can support colleagues to be more comfortable in delivering OAA. The session will also look at creative ways to achieve 30 active minutes of physical activity per day in school for all young people. We will provide practical examples of how cross-curricular outdoor learning can help all young people to be more physically active, while also supporting effective learning across the whole curriculum. Enrich Education is the only education partner of ‘The International Orienteering Federation’ (IOF) and the winner of “Best Primary Resource Award’ at the 2023 Education Resources Awards. We will provide a pack of our award-winning resources to all workshop attendees, for them to utilise in school.

The concept of this workshop is to provide interventions to help close the gap in movement skills between children’s motor competency, which may be affected due to a multitude of instances, such as a lack of exposure to physical activity in infancy for example. We are working in collaboration with The Leadership Foundation (previously Sports Leaders UK) to produce an accredited qualification.

Once you undertake the training, you will be qualified to run the screening programme in your schools. Following the screening programme, children will be able to engage more fully in PE lessons and they will develop confidence and competence to engage in greater physical activity.

According to new data published 13/07/23 by the National Child Mortality Database there has been an 85% increase in the number of child drownings in England between 2019 and 2022, with 20 drownings occurring in 2019/20 compared with 37 in 2021/22. The report marks the first time that data has been available which classifies child drowning fatalities based on ethnicity and deprivation levels. It shows that the risk of drowning was 3.5 times higher for children of Black or Black British ethnicity than White.

In the 2021 - 2022 academic year, only 14.2% of Black and 16.8% of Asian children participated in swimming activities at least once a week compared to 26.1% of White British children. This report also shows that the risk of drowning was 2 times higher for children from more deprived areas than from less deprived areas. Since the inception of the Black Swimming Association (BSA), we have been striving to ensure that ethnically diverse communities in the UK have equitable access to vital water safety, drowning prevention, and the benefits of swimming and aquatics.

In this workshop we share crucial new insights as to exactly why some of these disparities exist and what YOU can do NOW, to ensure the safety and aquatic development of every child and young person is equitable. Regardless of their ethnicity, gender or social status, no child, young person or community should be left behind.
