Risk Assessment CPD: Bespoke Support for Schools

Helping schools assess risk with confidence and deliver safe, effective PE and school sport.

Why do you need this training?

Risk assessment is an essential part of creating safe, effective and inclusive opportunities for pupils to take part in Physical Education, school sport and physical activity. Our Risk Assessment CPD has been designed specifically for schools and PE staff. The session provides practical training, guidance and support to help staff develop greater confidence and competence in the risk assessment process and ensure that their approach is appropriate and fit for purpose. The training focuses specifically on the realities of PE, school sport, enrichment activities, fixtures and events, helping staff understand how risk assessment principles can be applied in their own school setting.

Delivered by the authors of the Safe Practice

This CPD is delivered by the authors of the afPE Safe Practice in Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity guide. Our trainers bring extensive knowledge and experience of safe practice within PE, school sport and physical activity, alongside the latest understanding of guidance and practice in the sector. This means schools can access expert knowledge directly from those involved in developing and shaping guidance around safe practice.

What does the CPD cover?

The three-hour online session will support staff to understand and apply the principles of effective risk assessment within a Physical Education and school sport context.

Training can include:

  • Understanding the purpose and principles of risk assessment

  • Identifying hazards and assessing associated risks

  • Considering who may be at risk and the appropriate control measures

  • Developing proportionate and effective control measures

  • Understanding the difference between hazards, risks and controls

  • Reviewing existing risk assessments and identifying areas for improvement

  • Applying risk assessment principles to PE curriculum activities

Tailored to your school

Every school is different, and the risks associated with PE and school sport can vary depending on your facilities, activities, pupils and provision. The training can be shaped around the activities, facilities and risk assessments that are most relevant to your setting. Where appropriate, this may include reviewing examples of your existing documentation and using your own PE, school sport and enrichment scenarios to explore how risk assessment can be applied in practice. The aim is to ensure that staff leave the session with practical knowledge and greater confidence that they can use immediately within their school.

Our training uses realistic Physical Education and school sport scenarios to explore the risk assessment process in context. This can include scenarios relating to:

PE Curriculum:

  • Curriculum lessons and practical activities
