Parents banned from ferrying children to sports matches 30/06/08
Hundreds of thousands of parents will be banned from ferrying children to sports matches next year unless they have had criminal records checks, under new rules.
The clampdown is part of an escalation in child protection policies which will see 11 million adults vetted before they come into contact with children or vulnerable adults.
Under new regulations, parents who are asked by the organisers of a children's sports team to take other children to sports fixtures like football or cricket matches will have to be vetted.
However, the rules are open to misinterpretation because checks are not necessary if a parent offers to give a lift to a friend's children to a match without telling the local club.

No childhood will ever be entirely risk free. We should be wary of politicians who make this impossible, undesirable promise.

Lack of Physical Education teachers puts health drive in doubt
Figures released by the Scottish Executive show that in 2005 there were just three teachers with a principal subject of Physical Education between Glasgow's 178 primary schools. This follows a recent report which showed that only 5 per cent of primary schools in Scotland were receiving the minimum requirement of two hours of physical education each week.
Critics called for an urgent recruitment drive, warning that failure to address the shortage would result in crippling health and social problems. However, the executive insisted it was on course to meet its target of putting an additional 400 Physical Education teachers into primary and secondary schools by next year.
