On the 7th July 2005 members of baalpe (The British Association of Advisers and Lecturers in Physical Education) and PEA UK (Physical Education Association of the United Kingdom) attended their respective AGM's and voted to dissolve in favour of creating a new single physical education subject association - The Association for Physical Education (afPE).

afPE's Mission Statement:

The Association for Physical Education is committed to being the UK representative organisation of choice for people and agencies delivering or supporting the delivery of physical education in schools and in the wider community.

Our corporate objectives are to:

1. Demonstrate the distinctive role of physical education in children’s and young people’s development and achievements;
 
2. Establish and sustain physical education at the heart of school life and whole-school development, through support for high quality learning and teaching; research; ethical leadership; and politically informed advocacy and representation;

3. Raise awareness of physical education’s contributions to public health and well-being;

4. Play a leading role in the development of a workforce with the skills and qualities required to assure high quality physical education and sport in schools and in the wider community;

5. Provide high quality, professional, sustainable services for its members and partners.

Our Purpose:

We are committed to promoting and maintaining high standards and safe practice in all aspects and at all levels of physical education.

We also:

Are the voice of physical education. Influence developments in physical education at national and local levels.

Provide quality assured services and resources, provide valuable professional support for members and the teaching profession through a range of high quality CPD opportunities, regular updates, advice, insurance cover and dedicated helplines for health & safety and legal advice.

Full Member - £80.00

Personnel with QTS or individuals without QTS who have a higher or professional qualification and accepts the aims and values of, and support the work of the Association e.g. Consultant; Higher education lecturer; Further education lecturer; Class teacher primary; Curriculum leader primary; Teacher of physical education (secondary); Teacher of physical education (special); Primary link teacher; Head of department; Director of specialism; Development centre manager; LEA Advisor/inspector/advisory teacher; PESS/School sport co-ordinator; Partnership development manager; Other.

Honoured Member - £25.00

Members who have been formally recognised as having given notable service to the profession e.g. baalpe HLMs and PEA UK Fellows.

ASL Member - £45.00

Personnel engaged in activities that are relevant to the objectives of the Association e.g. Higher Level Teaching Assistant; Teaching assistant; Volunteer; NGB Coach; Other.

Primary School Membership - £40.00
(Includes 3 x editions of each quarterly publication of 'Primary Physical Education Matters' but does not include insurance as this is a 'school' membership).

Trainee and Student Member - £35.00
(Includes 'Physical Education Matters'. If you wish to take out insurance under this option, please contact Head Office for the relevant self assessment forms).

Personnel engaged in a course of study in Higher Education leading to an initial qualification in physical education, sports science of a related discipline or personnel engaged in initial teacher training e.g. Trainee/student primary; Trainee/student secondary; Other.

Retired Member - £35.00
(Includes 'Physical Education Matters').

Individuals who were formally active within physical education, sports and dance but who are now retired.

Library Subscription – £250.00
(Includes 'Physical Education Matters' and 'Physical Education & Sports Pedagogy').

Libraries, companies, corporations or any organisations whose services, work or products are relevant to the work or objectives of the Association. This category was formerly known as Commercial membership.

Overseas Members as above categories plus £20.00 p&p

Personnel who qualify for membership but who reside overseas.
