Physical Education & Sport Pedagogy (PESP)

Physical Education & Sport Pedagogy (PESP) Official afPE Journal

Overview:

Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy promotes the communication of educational research in physical education and youth sport and related fields such as teacher and coach education.

The journal encourages the submission of data-based and advocacy papers on teaching and coaching, learning and curriculum and especially the interdependence of these dimensions of pedagogy.

Papers must be informed by a theoretical perspective. At the same time, papers should be written in such a way as to be accessible to the broad community of scholars and informed readers in physical education and sport pedagogy. Contributors are encouraged to write in clear and lucid prose. If specialised terminology needs to be used, concepts should be explained briefly and clearly and illustrated by an example where appropriate.

Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy seeks to promote communication among an international community. Consequently, contributors should not assume that all readers will be familiar with terms that are particular to their own education systems (e.g. Key Stages, Attainment Targets, Key Learning Area, etc.) and so should provide a short explanation of these terms.

Physical Education Matters & Primary Physical Education Matters

Physical Education Matters

Overview:

Physical Education Matters & Primary Physical Education Matters are published by the Association for Physical Education (afPE).

The journals aim to educate, inspire and entertain its readership and as such are both highly respected publications, with each new edition eagerly awaited. Physical Education Matters & Primary Physical Education Matters cater for a diverse membership across the United Kingdom (and beyond) – trainee teachers, teachers, lecturers, advisers and consultants are just a few of the Physical Education and School Sport (PESS) professionals who read, and contribute to, the journals.

The journals are published termly (autumn, spring, summer). All PESS professionals are warmly invited to contribute please see Contributors’ Guidelines for further details.

Structure/Contents:

Physical Education Matters comprises eleven sections:

  • Welcome - messages from the Chair of the afPE Board and the editor of Physical Education Matters; plus our contents page
  • Policy Matters – articles solicited by afPE and written in line with the Association’s aims and objectives; or possibly articles posing new ideas for discussion by the profession
  • Practice Matters – articles written by PESS professionals, submitted to the editor for consideration
  • Research Matters – articles written by PESS professionals, submitted for peer review
  • Professional Leadership – Continuing Professional Learning – news, information and articles from afPE’s National College for CPL
  • Resource Matters – advertisements highlighting resources and products available from afPE
  • afPE Matters – news and reports from afPE’s Home Countries and English Regions; and membership information
  • International Matters – conference reports, international updates, diary dates and articles with an international influence
  • Final Whistle – a range of occasional and regular features which may include: Across the Sectors (updates from PESS organisations); Answerback (letters to the editor); Reviews; School Visit; and Day in the Life
  • Primary Physical Education Matters – our primary physical education supplement

Contributors’ Guidelines (General):

For all sections of the journal (other than Research Matters), colleagues should contact the editor (editor@afpe.org.uk) with an outline of their proposed article. Alternatively, completed articles can be sent without prior discussion, with a covering message. The editor will endeavour to publish all contributions in one format or another and is happy to guide colleagues through the process.

Some articles begin life as a one line email; others as an eight thousand word dissertation – both these scenarios present their own challenges, but both should eventually find their way into the journal in the required format. Please remember that you do not need to have been previously published to be accepted for Physical Education Matters; many of our regular contributors began their writing careers in Physical Education Matters and first time contributors are encouraged and supported through the writing process.

 Research Matters - Contributors' Guidelines

House Rules:

It would be extremely helpful if contributors could bear the following in mind:

  • Word count should be 1,800 words (two pages); or 2,600 (three pages); shorter or longer articles will be considered on an individual basis
  • Photographs (with relevant consents) can be submitted; alternatively images can be supplied by afPE’s official photographer
  • Physical education must be written in full throughout (lower case ‘p’ and ‘e’)
  • Acronyms / abbreviations must be written in full the first time they are used in each article; thereafter the abbreviation may be used (apart from the phrase ‘physical education’) – e.g. the benefits of outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) are well known. OAA has a special place in the curriculum.
  • Numbers one to twenty written in full; thereafter numerical
  • Single speech marks (unless direct speech)
  • Lower case used in bullet points (and no semi colons)
  • Harvard referencing (where applicable)
