This publication comments on a wide range of issues relevant to Muslim pupils in schools such as dress, meals, provision for prayer, religious festivals, educational trips, engaging with the Muslim community and physical education.

It is written in an informative, inclusive and enabling style from an Islamic position. The afPE comment is simply a response to the guidance that is suggested in relation to physical education from a broader perspective that includes both  statutory and health and safety considerations.

National Safeguarding Standards for Children and Young People

The need for standards for sports organisations was originally identified in the 2000 National Action Plan for Child Protection in Sport. Initial work was carried out by Sport England Governing Body Services, including consultation with stakeholder groups. This work was then taken forward and built on by the Sport Task Force on Policy and Standards. The Task Force was co-ordinated by the CPSU.

The Standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport are based on good practice and are informed by legislation and guidance, evidence from research and experience of what works drawn from the fields of child protection and from sport The Standards provide a national benchmark of good practice for sports organisations to work towards and is an important framework that schools should be aware of. Their implementation by an organisation helps to raise awareness among staff and volunteers and minimise avoidable risks. When the Standards are fully implemented, this is likely to increase confidence among parents and carers about their children's safety.

The CPSU publication Standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport gives full details of the standards, including their purpose, principles, use, and relevant information resources.
