Secondary Curriculum

Demonstrating National Standards at Key Stage 3

Physical education exemplification standards file level 3 – Launched Summer 2010

The exemplification of standards files for foundation subjects support effective assessment by demonstrating national standards across key stage 3 at National Curriculum levels 3 to 8.

They are a resource and reference point for teachers:

  • When assessing pupils' work in relation to national standards
  • For training and professional development purposes
  • When thinking about next steps for students

Each exemplification of standards file includes: examples of students' classroom work assessed against national standards; other supporting evidence; a detailed commentary; and an overall assessment judgement on the students' work.

Secondary Curriculum implementation Summary Report – Phase 2

Please find below, for your reference, two reports on the support provided to subject leaders by the subject associations and Aspect on the CfBT contract during phase 2. Each National Subject Lead (NSL) had to answer targeted questions from the QCDA around impact.

afPE/CfBT Secondary Curriculum Phase 3 support: From Implementation to Development

We are currently entering the third and final phase of the new secondary curriculum support.  Phase 1 focused on dissemination of key messages, what had changed and why?  Phase 2 focussed on implementation support around: increased 11-19 coherence from a learner's perspective; systematic planning for the whole school curriculum including PLTS and dimensions; disciplined curriculum innovation including developing a conversation around assessment; and developing approaches to increase all learner's engagement, motivation and commitment to learning.

Phase 3 is concerned with building on the implementation process under way by:

  • Securing the successful changes that are taking place so that they make a real difference to all learners
  • Using the evidence that has been gathered to inform the next steps
  • Ensuring we have robust systems and processes for evaluating the impact of changes made

In practice this means revisiting key messages and processes that have perhaps been overlooked as we focus on subject changes:

1. Revisit priorities
2. Lead and manage change using the 3 key questions driving change and the 7 disciplined innovation steps  so that we can measure impact
3. Focus on the 3 new curriculum aims and the list of aims for each of these
4. Develop more effective assessment
5. Explore and maximise opportunity as a result of the new flexibility (and this is different to freedom)
6. Continue to rethink subjects and their distinctive contribution in terms of implications for curriculum planning
7. Develop cross-curriculum planning
8. Develop and grow young people's minds and develop them as learners rather than simply 'deliver' the curriculum to them
9. Raise standards and recognise wider achievement
10. Lead to further improvements

Under the direction of the DCSF (now DfE) a coherent and collaborative programme of support is being provided by:

Secondary Curriculum – Useful publications and websites

Healthy lifestyles, sustainable development, re-engaging learners and mathematics are just some of the topics covered in a range of new publications by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in March and April 2009.

Two new planning guides, Cross Curriculum Dimension and Sustainable Development in Action, were launched at the Dimensions National Conference in London on 12 March.

Cross Curriculum Dimensions gives guidance to schools on how they can incorporate the seven dimensions – identity and cultural diversity, healthy lifestyles, community participation, enterprise, global dimension and sustainable development, technology and the media and creativity and critical thinking - into their curriculum. Sustainable development in action offers guidance to schools on how they can build sustainable development into their curriculum. Case studies show how different schools are doing this and highlight the extraordinary potential of learners to contribute to a sustainable future.

Another new publication released in March, Bringing greater coherence, helps secondary schools and colleges take a fresh look at their curriculum, making the most of when, where, with whom and how learning takes place.

Re-engaging key stage 4 learners is an updated version of a 2007 publication and gives guidance on how to re-engage young people in learning. It highlights good practice that has been taking place across the country through the use of case studies and is relevant to everyone working with young people at Key Stage 4 in mainstream or special schools, academies, pupil referral units, colleges, training providers and employers offering working experience.

All publications are available from QCA's orderline – http://orderline.qcda.gov.uk/
