Physical Education Matters

PEM_Autumn_2011

Physical Education Matters Overview:

Physical Education Matters is published by the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and the journal is one of the key benefits of afPE membership.

The journal aims to inspire, educate and entertain members by sharing information, research and practice from all those involved in physical education and school sport including policy makers, primary and secondary teachers, lecturers, advisers, consultants, coaches and students across the United Kingdom and beyond.

The journal is published termly (October, February and May). Each edition includes one or two key themes as well as a range of topics relating to physical education and school sport. All physical education and school sport professionals are warmly invited to contribute.  Please see the contributors’ guidelines for further details.

Structure/Contents:

Physical Education Matters comprises:

  • Welcome - Messages from the Chair of the afPE Board
  • Editorial Matters – A summary of the journal’s key articles and an introduction to relevant and topical issues
  • Policy Matters – Updates on policies and strategies, either from the UK governments or national agencies
  • Legacy Matters – Articles written by organisations and practitioners on how the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are creating a legacy for all young people
  • Research Matters – Articles written by physical education and school sport professionals, submitted for peer review
  • Practice Matters – Articles written by practitioners, solicited by the editors on key themes or general submissions by all, demonstrating the impact of high quality physical education and school sport; this includes reflections by schools (School Visit) and young people (A Day in the Life)
  • Professional Development Matters – Discussions on professional learning including news, information and articles from afPE’s National College for Professional Learning
  • afPE Matters – News and reports from afPE’s Home Countries and English Regions, membership information and news from other agencies in Across the Sectors
  • Resource Matters – Advertisements highlighting resources and products available from afPE; this section also includes Book Reviews featuring the latest thinking in physical education and sport.

From October 2011, Physical Education Matters covers both primary and secondary sectors, helping to ensure good transition and shared learning between the two.

Contributors’ Guidelines:

For all sections of the journal (other than Research Matters), colleagues should contact the editor ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) with an outline of their proposed article. Alternatively, completed articles can be sent without prior discussion, with a covering message. The Editors will endeavour to publish all contributions in one format or another and are happy to guide colleagues through the process.

Some articles begin life as a one line email; others as an eight thousand word dissertation – both these scenarios present their own challenges, but both should eventually find their way into the journal in the required format. Please remember that you do not need to have been previously published to be accepted for Physical Education Matters; many of our regular contributors began their writing careers in Physical Education Matters and first time contributors are encouraged and supported through the writing process.

Research Matters - Contributors' Guidelines

House Rules:

It would be extremely helpful if contributors could bear the following in mind:

  • Word count should be 1,800 words (two pages); or 2,600 (three pages); shorter or longer articles will be considered on an individual basis
  • Photographs (with relevant consents) can be submitted; alternatively images can be supplied by afPE’s official photographer
  • Physical education must be written in full throughout (lower case ‘p’ and ‘e’)
  • Acronyms/abbreviations must be written in full the first time they are used in each article; thereafter the abbreviation may be used (apart from the phrase ‘physical education’) – e.g. the benefits of outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) are well known. OAA has a special place in the curriculum
  • Numbers one to twenty written in full; thereafter numerical
  • Single speech marks (unless direct speech)
  • Lower case used in bullet points (and no semi colons)
  • Harvard referencing (where applicable)
